Finishing his post-election tour to different cities and towns of
Armenia, the opposition Heritage party's leader visited Thursday
evening Proshyan (Kotayk) to attend the civil funeral of the village's
governor, Hrach Muradayn, who was found killed outside his office
on Tuesday.
Raffi Hovhannisian expressed his deep sorrow for the governor's tragic
death, condemning his assassination.
"I join any sincere outburst, and condemn [the killing]. But let no
one attempt to make the tragic death of Hrach, the hero governor,
a political ad," he told the Armenian service of RFE/RL (Azatutyun),
noting that tragedy-based political campaigns have become a sad
tradition in Armenia's political life.
Muradyan, a member of the opposition Armenian Revolutionary
Federation-Dashnaksutyun, was a founder of a special battalion in
Shoushi during the Nagorno-Karabakh liberation war. The police have
reported two suspects in the incident earlier today. The men, Artak
Petrosyan (33) and Arayik Petrosyan (31) reportedly have connection
with circles close to the ruling Republican Party of Armenia.
"I am sure this death marks the divide which arrived ahead of April
9 (presidential inauguration day)," said Hovhannisian, adding that
he is joining a candlelight vigil in Yerevan's Liberty Square later
today to demand justice.
