AMMAN JAZZ FESTIVAL COMES TO LIFE

AMMAN - Ten ensembles coming from six countries and performing in
seven different venues is the musical concoction summed up as the
Amman Jazz Festival.
Covering a wide range of jazz genres the programme is bound to please
jazz lovers, whatever their taste. From the attractively titled Jazz
Abdel Wahab by prominent Jordanian artist Ayman Tayseer to Armenian
jazz piano star Vahagn Hayrapetyan, who will come from Armenia
especially for the festival, not forgetting a massive participation
by musicians from Holland, a country presenting not less than three
groups, the event truly deserves to be titled a festival.
With Arifa, Maarten Ornstein and A Tin Men and the Telephone, Holland
therefore will be the main "supplier" of musicians to this festival.
Arifa wants to be a "bridge of sounds between the Orient and
Occident". The instruments they play include Afro-Anatolian
percussions, piano, oud, saxophone, clarinet and ... a live laptop
computer. Those who thought a laptop computer can only be used to
check one's e-mail or Facebook page will have to take a fresh look
at the device.
Dutch saxophonist Maarten Ornstein goes from classic to contemporary,
from hip to serious, not forgetting avant-garde funky music material.
A Tin Men and the Telephone innovate not only with their curious name,
but also and essentially by incorporating sounds "found in everyday
life, into a show that combines theatrical and visuals aspects with
music. [...] things that normally go unnoticed or appear to just be
a nuisance: queues of service lines, directions from car navigation
devices".
OM Art Formation hails from Bulgaria and use elements of ethno, jazz,
new age, ambient and sacred music. The line-up consists of keyboard,
tambura, vocals, percussions and bass. Austrian-based Alp Bora Quartet
celebrates folkloric music from Turkey and the Balkan countries,
with accents from chamber music and other jazz influences.
German Pascal Schumacher Quartet is also very present on the Belgian
and Luxembourg music scenes. The young virtuoso vibraphonist will play
with pianist Franz Von Chossy, double bass Christophe Devisscher and
drummer Jens Duppe.
Omar Faqir is one of the best-known and most active Jordanian jazz
pianist and composer. Born to a family of renowned musicians, Faqir
continues the tradition with top notch performances each time he goes
on stage. His Faqir Syndicate group will participate in the festival
with one concert at Al Balad Theatre.
The artistic collaboration between American Kaelin Delong and Jordanian
Khries Bros will allow the audience to appreciate the always unexpected
combination that jazz can deliver, keeping the spirit of improvisation
and genre blending alive - one of jazz's main ingredients.
The seven venues that will host the festival are Al Balad Theatre,
Blue Fig, Corner's Pub, Institut Francais de Jordanie, Markaz Theatre,
Oobe and Zara Expo.
In addition to the concerts, OM Art Formation, Pascal Schumacher and
Arifa will conduct jazz workshops with students from various music
academies, schools and conservatories in Amman.
