THE PLAYING CARD OF KARABAKH, THE ONLY "WEAPON" OF KREMLIN

    August 8 2013

As shown, with regard to presenting counter-arguments in Armenia
against the EU association agreement, without finding any solid
excuse, after a long thinking, the Kremlin finally found the most
painful topic for the citizens of Armenia. On daily basis, the experts
representing Russian orientation act in Russian agencies with lengthy
articles. They all in united forces settle down to a sacred task of
saving Nagorno-Karabakh from the EU... In an interview with Czech
expert Erika Lerner talking about Armenia's European integration
issue, noted that one should keep in mind that during the period after
initialing the EU association agreement, the EU will closely follow the
suitability of Armenia to its principles. Looks like Armenia's society
will suffer if the European legislation and standards are applied to
our lives and the implementation thereof is monitored by the EU. Then,
as a "serious" analyst, Lerner notes, "There is no doubt for a serious
analyst that the "and-and" formula is impossible first because of the
EU requirements." Not to go for signing of an Association Agreement,
as a weighty matter, the expert presents the question made publicly
by politicians and experts recently serving the Russian interests
as to what is expected to Karabakh after signing of the Association
Agreement... The picture, of course, is terrifying. "Karabakh territory
can be formally included in the negotiating process of the EU and
Azerbaijan Association. Europeans will not protect Armenia's status
as Karabakh's protector... EU, economically, politically, and in
all other possible ways, will detach Karabakh from Armenia. I think
that the detachment mechanisms will be known after initialing the
agreement,"-says the expert. In the same spirit, again in Regnum ,
founder and general director of Russia's "National Energy Security
Fund" Konstantin Simonov explains what requirements Azerbaijan is
going to represent to Europe. "If you are saying for years that
we need any gas, except for Russian, and now there is no other
alternative in the market, not available in Iran, not available in
Egypt, all these projects blowout as soap bubbles, no Turkmen gas,
in this case, sooner or later, Azerbaijan will say: "We, certainly,
will give you gas, but we will bring forwards our requirements." And,
of course, the Russian expert knows what requirement Azerbaijan will
represent to Europeans: progress in the Karabakh settlement process.

What a sudden solicitude over Nagorno-Karabakh by Moscow! In a joint
press conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart, the RF Foreign
Affairs Minister speaks about "Azerbaijan occupied" territories,
and now Russian expert circles are trying to save Karabakh from the
threat of presenting requirement by Azerbaijan as a result of signing
of the Association Agreement with the EU. The Karabakh playing card
has actually become the only "weapon" of Kremlin to "strengthen" the
reasons of Armenia to refuse from EU Association Agreement. To the
point, about the weapon... Yesterday, Azerbaijani agencies informed
remarkable information: Russian-Azerbaijani military cooperation has
registered serious progress. The matter reached the missiles ...

Yesterday, Azerbaijan's Defense Industry Minister Yaver Jamalov
received the Russian delegation led by Director General of the
Corporation for Missile Weapons Boris Obnosov. The official message
disseminates the press service of Azerbaijan's Defense Industry
Ministry, informing that during the meeting the sides discussed the
prospects of cooperation in the defense industry between the two
countries, and other issues of mutual interest. After all these,
it's worth to ask savors of Karabakh from the EU whether as of
today another imperative has not been matured: to save Nagorno
Karabakh from Russian-Azeri military alliance, as well as the issue
of appropriateness of relations of the Armenian-Russian strategic
    alliance. Emma GABRIELYAN
