MS. NAIRA'S SORROW
On August 2 draft amendments to the law on gender equality were
circulated at the National Assembly. The author of the draft amendments
is Naira Zohrabyan of Prosperous Armenia Party.
According to Ms. Zohrabyan's justification, the term gender is given
a "legal definition and it is set down as an acquired and socially
established behavior whereas initially it is the aspect of relations
between two different genders existing in nature, men and women".
Zohrabyan suggests editing the notion of gender to read as follows:
"Social aspect of relations between women and men."
In the larger context this law is related to the European integration
of Armenia and has become one of the arguments of those who are against
it. They say Europe is immoral, and we have nothing to do there. It
is said that if we follow the "European practice", the society will be
perverted, and the super basis, the family, will collapse. In addition,
such arguments are "supported" also by Russia.
It should be noted that these "gender-related" phenomena are typical of
not only Europe. In Russia and Armenia they equally exist but unlike
them in Europe they are not "ashamed" of speaking about it and they
are starting to regulate it with a law.
In Armenia, however, the issue is deeper than just relations between
the genders. Since independence the policies conducted in Armenia put
the Armenian men in an inextricable situation. The public morality
was already based on the assumptions that "man supports family",
"whatever we do is for the sake of our children", "successful man"
and other similar principles. He must be successful, i.e. take part in
the crimes of the authorities, steal, to get their quota and support
their family or he must leave the country to work abroad and support
the family.
The Armenian man was humiliated. On the one hand, he was suffocated
by the public morals, on the other hand, the social situation. Plus
the whole falsehood completed with national and other mythology. The
mythology did not allow them "to stay and make a revolution" and people
left the country alone or with their families. On top of all, Robert
Kocharyan made the famous statement on existence of men in the country.
Instead, "winner" men took the lead in the country and destroyed the
natural and legal mechanisms of organization of public life through
mutated forms of "natural selection" and imposed their own "morality"
and complexes on people. They divided the political and economic
resources of the country among themselves, forcing people to put up
with them and become their bootlickers and flatterers or leave. And
be punished for disobedience. They covered everything with political
and constitutional shields.
Having been deprived of state for centuries, the Armenian men had to
be crafty to be successful. However, in their own state an atmosphere
should have been created where the Armenian men and women could rid of
marred morality and ethics in their natural environment and relations.
The Armenian people have not lost this potential even after centuries
of slavery. Evidence is the war in Karabakh when women sent their
men to war to come back with the shield or on the shield because
then it was a shame to cheat and it was an honor to fight. There
were thousands of feats, a miracle of heroism because the Armenian
man appeared in his natural environment and pursued his natural value.
What do we have now? Crafty authorities, crafty political forces,
crafty officials who have made the country unfit for living, creating
and developing. They display exceptional "genderism". Samvel Alexamyan
says that he has nothing of his own, everything belongs to his
wife who does not give him money. Or Surik Khachatryan whose wife
interfered in the bloody incident at their house at night to prevent
the bloodshed. Or take Naira Zohrabyan's example. She is the only
representative of her party who makes critical speeches.
The congregation of these crafty people has launched an abject campaign
for obedience. In this case to Russia. Tomorrow they will do the same
for the Americans, then Turks, then the others. And all for the sake
of keeping their property and positions of crafty men.
