15 Armenian NGOs have expressed their protest against the planned
relocation of the UN European office in Istanbul. The relevant letter
addressed to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Resident
Representative of UNDP in Armenia Patrice Coeur-Bizot has been passed
to the Yerevan Office of the UN. In particular, the Association "For
Sustainable Human Development", Center for Civil Society Development,
Alternative Research Center and other organizations signed the letter.
Head of the Association "For Sustainable Human Development" Karine
Danielyan said at the Jan 19 press conference that it is illogical,
unethical and unreasonable to trust the regional office to Turkey. She
pointed out that Turkey denies its privity to the Armenian Genocide
1915, which was condemned by a number of UN member states. In this
context, Danielyan Turkey uses the forthcoming relocation of the
European office in Istanbul for its own interests in relation to the
upcoming centenary of the Genocide.
She added that Turkey has continued the blockade of Armenia for over
20 years, and this has an extremely bad impact on the republic's
economy. Danielyan stressed that Turkey has no diplomatic relations
with some countries of the region, including countries within the
jurisdiction of the UNDP regional office in Bratislava. "This fact
will be an essential obstacle for participation of Armenian
delegations and NGOs in the UNDP's activity", she said.
Danielyan said that no final decision on relocation of the European
office in Istanbul has been taken yet, though Turkey has promised to
cover most part of the costs. "We hope that the UN will remain
committed to its principles and will take into account the obstacles
and risks we have mentioned", she said.
