YEREVAN. - There is a need to raise the moral and psychological spirit
of the people in Armenia. Presidential candidate, opposition Heritage
Party Chairman, former FM Raffi Hovannisian said this during a press
conference on Monday.
According to him, this could be achieved solely by way of returning
the power to the people.
"It is necessary to create conditions so that not only the
representatives of the [Armenian] diaspora, but also those that have
gone abroad for work may return to Armenia," Hovannisian stated.
In response to the question as to whether his being elected president
in the forthcoming election would result in a sharp deterioration
of relations with Azerbaijan-in connection with his initiative for
Armenia to formally recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic (NKR)-, Hovannisian said in foreign policy matters Armenia
should be guided by its own interests.
"Today, when Azerbaijan is exerting all efforts to put an end to
the Karabakh issue, Armenia's recognition of NKR will not result
in military actions. Also, the time has come to put an end to the
unlawful Armenian-Turkish protocols," Raffi Hovannisian concluded.
