YEREVAN, JULY 26, ARMENPRESS: Tumo will hold the opening of a group
exhibition featuring original visual compositions by students in three
of the premier summer design and communication workshops on July 27. As
Armenpress was reported by the Tumo Center for Creative Technologies,
the final component of the exhibit will feature video projections and
glass case installations of objects collected by students depicting
the rich history of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. Having worked with
artist Silvina DerMeguerditchian and historians Vahe Tachjian and Elke
Hartmann- directors of the web-based project Houshamadyan-students
will visually present the captivating collection of oral histories,
memory items, and primary stories they gathered in regards to Ottoman
Armenian life.
Hacob Khodaverdian's creative photography and object storytelling
workshop will also be represented with a multi-platform display of
over 15 student photographs. The exhibit will be a cumulative display
of the creative photography, lighting, composition, post production,
and digital techniques explored by the students in the workshop led
by the award-winning photographer.
"I am very impressed by the great desire of the Armenian young people
to learn", - said Narineh Mirzaeian, who has arrived in Armenia from
Los Angeles to teach the Armenian students design works.
"Judging from the photos of the students, I can say that the
achievements they have are great", - noted Hacob Khodaverdian, whose
mission is to share with the Tumo students his rich experience in
the photo industry.
Vahe Tachjian is a historian specializing in the last years of the
Ottoman Empire and history of the Middle East. He is the author of
many academic articles and books. Based in Berlin, he is currently
the Project Director and Chief Editor of the Houshamadyan website.
Elke Hartmann has studied History and Middle Eastern/Islamic Studies in
Berlin specializing on Modern Ottoman history. She has done extensive
research in the Ottoman State Archives, complementing her use of a
variety of Armenian sources. She is the Chair of the Houshamadyan
association.
Silvina Der-Meguerditchian is a visual artist and current Artistic
Director of the Houshamadyan website project. Her artistic work deals
with issues of national identity, memory, and the role of minorities
in society. Her work has a very heterogeneous language (installation,
video, sound installation, audiowalk, rugs, bi-dimensional image,
etc.) and has been displayed internationally in respected institutions
and galleries.
Hacob Khodaverdian was born in Isfahan, Iran and now lives and
works in Los Angeles. His photography career started in 1995 after
graduating from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA, where he
received his Bachelor of Arts in Photography. He has been shooting
continuously ever since with an emphasis on product and still life
photography for a variety of clients such as Apple, Nike, Sony, Nestle
and Taco Bell. Editorially, he has shot for Los Angeles Magazine,
Outside Magazine and Playboy. He has also been teaching for many
years, first at UCLA extension and currently at Art Center College
of Design. Hacob has won numerous awards for his work, most notably
the Communications Arts Award in 2003.
Narineh Mirzaeian is a Los Angeles based designer whose work focuses
on the development of dynamic building technologies integrating
digital design and advanced fabrication techniques. Through her
multidisciplinary practice she engages in design work at various scales
across a broad range of disciplines to study and cultivate works of
spatial and material interest. Previously she was an Architectural
Associate at Gehry Partners for eight years where she played a
key role on numerous projects completed and under construction
internationally. Prior to her tenure at GP, she was project designer
at Graft, overseeing the realization of several award winning projects.
She holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University
of Southern California and a Master of Architecture degree from the
University of California, Los Angeles where her thesis project, was
published as part of the L.A. Now series garnering numerous awards,
including the 2005 P/A Award. She is currently a lecturer at the
University of California, Los Angeles.
