YEREVAN. - The existence of the present-day EU depends on the
Franco-German reconciliation process, German Ambassador to Armenia,
Reiner Morell, stated during a press conference on Monday, reflecting
on the program entitled "Building a Common Future: Franco-German
History Textbook Sample."
To an observation that, during his recent visit to Armenia, President
Norbert Lammert of the German Bundestag (Parliament) had compared
Armenia with African countries, the ambassador noted that the given
matter referred to the ongoing Armenia-EU Association Agreement talks.
"It is known that Armenia is conducting talks with the EU on the
Association Agreement and the establishment of a [Armenia-EU Deep and]
Comprehensive Free Trade Area. In all probability, the matter referred
to the likely prospect after the signing of the Association Agreement.
"The issue is that Armenia seeks another status, rather than
membership. Norbert Lammert just wanted to stress how difficult that
road is," Reiner Morell said, and added that the EU stands ready to
accept new members, but not every minute.
