Today the Baku court sentenced the chief editor of "Khural" newspaper
Avaz Zeynalli to 9 years of imprisonment. According to several local
newspapers, after the announcement of the sentence the people in the
hall were shouting "Liberty". The international organizations and many
local NGOs believe that he was arrested because of his professional
activities, in particular for publishing articles about the illegal
actions of the high ranking officials.
Avaz Zeynalli was arrested based on the claim of the MP Gyulnar
Ahmedova, who is also arrested based on the article of fraud of
Azerbaijani Criminal Code.
During the trail the journalist rejected the guild completely and
said that he is arrested based on the order of the head of I.Aliev
administration Ramiz Mehtiev and the head of civil-political unit
Ali Hasanov.
The court announced him guild for large-scale bribery, extortion
with threat, for disobedience to the court, for evasion of taxes,
which are gross violations of Azerbaijani Criminal Code.
