YEREVAN. - Had Armenia's opposition Heritage Party leader, former FM
Raffi Hovannisian-who is declared runner-up to the winner, incumbent
President Serzh Sargsyan, as a result of the presidential election that
was conducted on February 18, but who claims to be the real winner in
the vote and who declared a hunger strike on March 10 at capital city
Yerevan's Liberty Square-asked me whether I will be in favor of his
going on a hunger strike, I would have answered no because I know the
meaning of the word he utters and I know its consequences. National
Assembly Heritage Faction leader Ruben Hakobyan said this Tuesday
during the outdoor press conference at Liberty Square.
He noted that Hovannisian's hunger strike was based on two factors:
First, because the halls of power are further escalating the political
battle. And second, because the authorities know that they have
rigged the election and know what happened, but do not permit the
law to be exercised.
Hakobyan noted that Hovannisian's hunger strike was not planned but,
following the incidents that occurred in Sevan city, Hovannisian said
he will not allow blood to be shed.
"I have faith that something will change before April 9 [when Sargsyan
is slated to swear in for a second term], Ruben Hakobyan stated,
and stressed that they will stand up for the people's votes.
