Heritage party leader Raffi Hovannisian's meeting with Armenia's
President Serzh Sargsyan will only take place in Freedom Square,
Heritage party Vice-Chairman Armen Martirosyan told journalists
on Thursday.
Mr Martirosyan does not see a better place for such a meeting. It
was in Freedom Square that the national liberation movement began
and the 50th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was marked in 1965.
Mr Martirosyan stressed the difficulty of struggling not only against
Armenia's authorities, but also against "so-called experts" and media
outlets. In commenting on the developments in Freedom Square they
are hinting that the proposals are just a bargain or demand for posts.
"They are turning a blind eye to the first paragraph, which contains
a clear demand for snap presidential and parliamentary elections,"
Mr Martirosyan said.
The people in question "are even worse than the authorities" because
the authorities "are saying point-blank, 'we are such, we must be
corrupt'."
With respect to the latest public opinion polls, which show that 60%
of Yerevan residents intend to vote for incumbent Mayor of Yerevan
Taron Margaryan (who tops the ruling Republican Party of Armenia
[RPA] list), Mr Martirosyan considers any comments untimely.
Similar polls on the threshold of presidential election showed that
only 10% of Armenia's voters intended to support Raffi Hovannisian.
Later, however, the authorities had to resort to election frauds.
Some citizens have informed Mr Martirosyan of planned bribery of
voters.
According to Mr Martirosyan, in behalf of the Heritage party and its
leader, RPA is trying to collect information on voters.
Vahagn Khachatryan, who tops the list of the opposition Armenian
National Congress (ANC), announced the initiative to form a joint
headquarters to prevent election frauds.
Mr Martirosyan said that the Hello Yerevan movement will join "if it
sees a real struggle."
