Opposition Heritage party lawmaker Zaruhi Postanjyan, who posed
a question about gambling to President Serzh Sargsyan during the
plenary session of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly
(PACE) in Strasbourg on Wednesday, will no longer be on the Armenian
parliamentary delegation to this European structure, it emerged today.
Armenian Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan invoked the Armenian
Constitution provisions and PACE regulations that he said prohibit
offensive and slanderous statements in announcing the decision to
expel Postanjyan from the delegation.
It follows Postanjyan's controversial question-and-answer exchange
with President Sargsyan, who made a speech at the PACE the previous
day. The Armenian lawmaker known for her flamboyance and sharp tongue
described Sargsyan as an illegitimate president who did not represent
the Armenian people before alleging that he, Sargsyan, had gambled
away a sum of 70 million Euros at a European casino.
In response, Sargsyan denied having ever gambled in a casino,
describing Postanjyan's assertions as "another product of her
imagination".
"I have never been to any casino in Europe, I do not gamble in
casinos. Unfortunately, I have no opportunity to be in possession
of 70 million Euros. If I had such an opportunity, I would donate
part of it to you to be happy with your life and not to have so much
evilness in you," said Sargsyan.
Speaker Abrahamyan said in parliament today: "Considering the behavior
of National Assembly member Zaruhi Postanjyan at the PACE yesterday and
basing on part 1 of Article 18 of the National Assembly regulations,
I announce that I have conducted consultations with National Assembly
factions and am going to make a change in the Armenian delegation to
the PACE."
Earlier, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Eduard Sharmazanov, who is
also a spokesman for President Sargsyan's ruling Republican Party,
described Postanjyan's behavior in Strasbourg as "disgusting".
"I am sorry that we still have such members of parliament. It is
disgusting when a political figure know no boundaries," he said.
Postanjyan has already indicated that he is going to put up a legal
fight against the speaker's decision.
