ARMENIAN PHARMACEUTICAL EXECUTIVE URGES GOVERNMENT TO REVISE LEGISLATION
YEREVAN, October 9. / ARKA /. Vigen Topuzyan, the director of the
Scientific and Technological Center of Organic and Pharmaceutical
Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, urged
today the government to revise the legislation governing production
of medicines, because in its current form it contains inaccuracies
and omissions that lead to serious problems in this area, after the
economy ministry has banned it from production of medications due to
lack of a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certificate of conformity,
introduced in Armenia earlier this year for pharmaceutical companies.
The ministry of economy I said to be inspecting local pharmaceutical
companies in order to verify their compliance with GMP standards.
"Despite the fact that we produced quality products for many years,
now we can not do so any longer, because we were not awarded the GMP
certificate, although our products comply with its requirements,'
Topuzyan said at a news conference.
He said the ban was justified by the fact that the equipment used
for drug production does not comply with the latest European standards.
In this context, Topuzyan noted that there are no specific standards
and documents to be used to monitor the compliance of Armenian
medications to European standards.
"I have repeatedly called on various government agencies to draw
up a document in the Armenian language that will identify all the
necessary standards for issuance of GMP certificate, but my requests
remain unanswered ," he said.
Topuzyan also added that major Armenian medicines producing companies
do not have GMP certificates either, however, they continue to work.
ARKA has asked the health ministry for comments.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, production
of pharmaceutical products in January- August 2013 amounted to 3.315.3
billion drams, a 37 percent growth year-on-year.
The Scientific and Technological Center of Organic and Pharmaceutical
Chemistry established in 2006 specializes in scientific research in
the field of organic and pharmaceutical chemistry and production and
sale of drugs and chemicals. ($1 - 405.75 drams). -0- - See more at:
