LEPEKHIN: ARMENIA SHOULD PUT FORWARD ITS DEMANDS FOR JOINING CUSTOMS UNION AND SEEK COMPLIANCE WITH THEM

YEREVAN, October 18. /ARKA/. Armenia, taking into account its
interests, should put forward its demands for joining the Customs
Union and should seek compliance with them, Vladimir Lepekhin, the
director of the Eurasian Economic Community Institute and a member of
the Eurasian Economic Integration Bureau of the Scientific Council of
the Russian Academy of Sciences, said Friday in Novosti International
    Press Center in Yerevan.

"The thing is not that there is a work regime in the Customs Union,
some agreements among its member countries and tough regulations,
which Armenia ought to comply with," he said. "The matter should be
considered in a different way - Armenia, understanding own interests,
before joining some unions, in this particular case the Customs Union,
should describe the conditions, under which it is ready to join the
union and should seek compliance with them."

"The ball is on the Armenian side of the field, and nobody says that
Armenia must become a member of the Customs Union tomorrow or in
one month - we say that it would be reasonable to launch the joining
    procedure now," Lepekhin added.

Commenting on west-leaning political and public activists' statements
that the Customs Union will restrict Armenia's sovereignty, the
expert said that unlike the European Union, the Eurasian Union and
the Customs Union make all their decisions by consensus - any country,
even small, has equal vote with Russia.

In early September, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and his Russian
counterpart, Vladimir Putin, made a joint statement, according to
which Armenia has decided to join the Customs Union and to take part
in formation of the Eurasian Union in the future.

The announcement came as Armenia was poised to sign the Association
Agreement with the European Union aimed at making European Union's
ties with Ukraine, Armenia, Moldova and Georgia closer. -0-
