Armenia U17 0-2 Republic of Ireland U17 - Boys in Green seal progress
to Elite Stage
Tom Mohan's side followed up their 4-1 win over Gibraltar with another
convincing display to advance to the next round of Euro 2014
qualifying
Tom Mohan's Republic of Ireland Under-17s guaranteed a top two finish
in Euro 2014 Qualifying First Round Group Seven with a 2-0 win over
group hosts Armenia. Georgie Poynton and Jesse Devers were on target
for the Boys in Green to earn all three points.
Armenia missed the chance to go ahead after just two minutes as James
Talbot fouled Robert Minasyan in the area. However, the goalkeeper
redeemed himself with a great save to keep out Hayk Galstyan before
Minasyan knocked the rebound onto the post.
The Boys in Green made no mistake from the spot when they won their
own penalty on 30 minutes, with Dundalk midfielder Georgie Poynton
capitalising after a handball in the box. Ireland's second came midway
through the second-half as Devers fired home following Corey Whelan's
initial effort.
After the match, manager Tom Mohan praised his young side. "It's
really a sense of great relief to progress. We were up against the
home nation in a game that had a cup final feel because it was winner
takes all," he said.
"The players were fantastic. Armenia pushed a lot of bodies forward
and were a completely different side than they were against England in
their opening game. Our lads showed a lot of character to withstand
the pressure at times. We had our chances as well but overall we
showed great character throughout. it's a great feeling to be
through."
Ireland play England on Tuesday, October 29 to determine the winner of
Group Seven.
