Armenia to continue cooperation with EU, but won't question strategic
union with Russia - Armenian PM
YEREVAN. Oct 25
Armenia intends to continue close cooperation with Europe in all
areas, but its strategic union with Russia will remain the foundation
of the country's security, Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan,
deputy chairman of Armenia's ruling Republican Party, said.
"We will be consistent in continuing close cooperation with Europe,
without opposing it to the Customs Union. We want broad and
comprehensive relations with Europe," Sargsyan said at the summit of
the European People's Party in Brussels.
Sargsyan said Armenia wants to work with Europe in all areas,
specifically, state development, effective management and democracy,
judicial and legal reforms, corruption prevention, economic and trade
activities, security and military issues, culture, and education, the
Armenian government press service told Interfax.
"We want to continue cooperation with the EU. We don't regard
cooperation with the EU in the context of 'black and white.' We flatly
deny this approach. Being in a blockade and having hostile neighbors,
Armenia cannot question the issue of its security and its vital
strategic union with Russia, which is the foundation of our country's
security," the Armenian prime minister said.
He also said that "Yerevan sees the strengthening and expansion of
relations with Europe and Armenia's accession to the Customs Union as
mutually complimentary, not contradictory processes."
