Overall, 189,000 people with disabilities are officially registered in
Armenia, with 92% of them unemployed, according to the USAID-financed
Livelihood Improvement through Fostered Employment (LIFE) program.
The Save the Children organization and the International Organization
for Migration (IOM) presented a program on Tuesday.
Dr. Karen R. Hilliard USAID/Armenia Mission Director noted that
employers prefer young pretty girls.
It is time for a law that would ban any discrimination against people
with disabilities and allow their employment on equal conditions,
she said.
Armenia's Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Jemma
Baghdasaryan stressed the need for equal opportunities for people
with special needs to become full members of society.
"The government has approved a relevant bill, which has been submitted
to Armenia's Parliament. Government-financed organizations must
set an example in employing people with disabilities," she said. Ms
Baghdasaryan commended Armenia's Ministry of Emergency Situations,
which has employed 30 people with disabilities.
Save the Children Country Office Director Irina Saghoyan said that
people with disabilities can not only be conscientious workers, but
can also bring economic advantages to employers. About 600 people with
disabilities are not taking retraining courses to be employed later.
