OPPOSITION MP RAISES QUESTION OF SALE OF WEAPONS TO AZERBAIJAN DURING CSTO MEETING

YEREVAN. - The opposition Armenian MP demanded that the documents
provided during the CSTO session should be translated into Armenian.
Talking to the reporters on the margins of the meeting of CSTO PA
standing committee on defense and security, Khachatur Kokobelyan said
he demanded a translator.
"I do respect Russian language and other languages of the CSTO member
states, but Armenian is a state language of Armenia," he emphasized.
Kokobelyan said he was surprised to see that the issue of Abkhazia
and Ossetia were not included in the agenda.
During the meeting, the MP offered to include the issue on Russia's
sales of weapons to Azerbaijan.
"Under the third paragraph of the Agreement on Friendship and
Cooperation between Russia and Armenia, signed in 1997, the parties are
obliged to assist the establishment of peace and reduction of tensions
in every way possible," he said, recalling that Russia had recently
sold weapons to Azerbaijan, a deal amounting to more than $4 billion.
He noted that in this regard it is unclear how Russia is contributing
to the arms cut. Moreover, in the context of regional tension and on
the basis of the essence of the CSTO, the member countries should be
concerned about whether the organization can be taken seriously when
the sale of weapons was described as a business plan
Kokobelyan believes the Armenian delegates to CSTO PA must be
consistent on the issue and must demand political assessment.
