CUSTOMS UNION DEAL HAS ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS - POLITICIAN
12:58 10.09.13
In an interview with Tert.am, a spokesperson for the Prosperous Armenia
party (PAP), Tigran Urikhanyan, said their political force will speak
of the Customs Union integration process after it has comprehensive
information concerning the deal.
Mr Urikhanyan, yesterday, all the political forces represented in
Armenia's parliament were calling for the Armenian president and
foreign minister to come and give clarifications as to the essence of
the Customs Union agreement. However, the political forces themselves
- with a few exceptions - avoided expressing their own opinion. So,
what is the PAP's stance on the Customs Union membership?
We were talking of that the whole day. It is an economic agreement,
isn't it? Hence there is a simple truth behind that. While searching
for the Armenian interests and the national state interest it is
necessary to come across economic justifications. Am I right?
Yes.
After listening to the economic justifications, we are ready, of
course, to express our viewpoint at [debates held] in different
format. But it is necessary to listen to those justifications first.
But an economic cooperation is known to have political implications.
To the best of my knowledge, the European Union's example was brought
recently as a purely economic project at the initial stage.
We have permanently talked of the cooperation and the relations with
all the states not included in the agreement, and there are no changes
there. As for the agreement proper, I repeat that we pursue an economic
interest. It is necessary to receive an answer to all the questions.
