Protesters held a demonstration outside the Russian Consulate in New
York on Friday to express support to Levon Hayrapetyan, the
Russian-Armenian businessman-philanthropist detained in Moscow last
month.
The crowd called for urgent efforts to release the businessman.
On August 15, a Moscow court rejected a motion to free the 65-year-old
who is considered one of the wealthiest Armenians around the globe.
A defense lawyer asked for releasing the businessman on bail, citing
his age and deteriorating health condition (Hayrapteyan suffers from
heart disorders and cancer and has survived stroke twice). The court,
however, declared the detention legal.
Hayrapetyan was arrested in a Moscow airport on July 15 over alleged
links to a criminal group involved in the sale of Sistema JFSC to
Bashneft. The court later brought money laundering charges against the
businessman.
The accused followed the hearing through a video conference from his
isolation cell, as he was unable to be physically present in the
courtroom. He had even asked that the appeal be considered without
him, but the court insisted on the businessman's presence.
