AZERBAIJAN LEADER: TALKS NOT THE ONLY WAY TO RESOLVE NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT

Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev has taken issue with the point
that there is no alternative to talks as a way of settling the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
"We can hear positive statements from the leaders of mediator
countries, and I must specially point out words about the
unacceptability of the status quo that were written down in joint
statements of the heads of state of the nations co-chairing the
Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe. That is a very positive fact," Aliyev said at a government
meeting on Thursday.
However, mediators "are constantly repeating that there is no
alternative to negotiations," he said.
"You know, in the modern world there are enough alternatives in every
sphere. It's just that we want the problem to be solved in a peaceful
way. Azerbaijan has presented its constructive position, and I hope
the mediators will play an even more active role in the negotiation
process," the president said.
It is an indispensable condition for the settlement of the conflict
that Armenia should comply with four UN Security Council resolutions,
namely withdraw from the Azeri territory it is occupying, he insisted.
"Azerbaijan will never allow a second Armenian state to be set up
on what is part of its historical territory," he said, reiterating
that Azerbaijan would not accept any solution that means its loss of
"territorial integrity."
