Most Armenians want to join the Eurasian Economic Union - parliamentary speaker
YEREVAN July 4
- The Armenian people who are largely oriented at Russia want their
country to join the Eurasian Economic Union, Galust Saakyan, the
speaker of the Armenian National Assembly (parliament), told Itar-Tass
ahead of his first official visit to Moscow on July 6-7.
"Sociological surveys have revealed that about 70% of Armenia's
population support and approve our stance on allied relations with
Russia and accession to the Eurasian Union," the speaker stressed.
He said Armenia's entry into the Eurasian Economic Union was its
independent and responsible decision. "This is our firm and
established position. We believe that these relations derive from our
common interests and are beneficial both for us and the Union. After
all, these are relations of equal partners. We do not feel pressure on
the part of anybody," Saakyan went on to say.
The speaker explained the broad public support for the move by
Armenia's close links to the cultural and educational system that had
existed in Soviet days, and even before.
"Historically, our artists, cultural figures and academics developed
mainly in the Russian medium," Saakyan said.
"That helped us preserve, develop and multiply our cultural values in
the scientific sphere, for example, and make the most from our
contacts with Russia. Our intellectuals had a unique opportunity to
use the Russian language and Russian culture to become familiar with
world literature and culture, and we appreciate it," the Armenian
parliament speaker stressed.
