YEREVAN. Nov 12
The Armenian Defense Ministry has warned Azerbaijan of possible
consequences after an Mi-24 helicopter belonging to the self-proclaimed
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic's air force had been shot down in
Nagorno-Karabakh.
"This is an unprecedented act of provocation that has led to the
situation's escalation. The consequences for the Azeri side will
be very painful, and all responsibility will rest with the Azeri
political leadership," Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman Artsrun
Ovannisian said on Facebook on Wednesday.
Azerbaijan continued to shell the area where the helicopter crashed
to prevent rescue teams from approaching the crew, he said.
"The Azeri Defense Ministry's statement that the helicopter was shot
down after it took an attack course and attacked Azeri armed forces
positions is absurd. The examination of the debris will confirm that
the helicopter did not carry ammunition," Ovannisian said.
The helicopter crew's commander was Maj. Sergei Saakian, Ovannisian
said. "More information will be given later about the crew's fate,"
he said.
The Armenian military news agency Razminfo had reported earlier on
Wednesday citing its own sources that three people had been killed
as a Nagorno-Karabakh air force helicopter crashed.
The tactical exercises Unity 2014 have been carried out in
Nagorno-Karabakh under a program of military cooperation with Armenia
for 2014.
