YEREVAN - The Cafesjian Center for the Arts (CCA) announces the
opening of a landmark exhibition Kochar: Challenging the Time
dedicated to the 115th birthday anniversary of the Armenian celebrated
artist Ervand Kochar.
Organized in partnership with the Ervand Kochar Museum as part of
CCA's Museum Networking program, the exhibition brings together a
brilliant selection of works, including masterpieces from Kochar's
Paris and Yerevan periods.
Featuring thirty works from the Ervand Kochar Museum and private
collections, Kochar: Challenging the Time offers a unique opportunity
to experience the development of Kochar's ideological and aesthetic
world through paintings, graphic works, sculptures and his
groundbreaking form of plastic art "Painting in Space". The exhibition
focuses on Kochar's evolving artistic vision, demonstrating how the
artist's imagery went through a constant process of metamorphosis.
Arriving in Paris in 1923 at the age of 24, from the very first
months, Kochar firmly launched his career in the complex and
attractive artistic environment of the city, exhibiting together with
the leading artists of the era. Within a short period of time his art
was regarded as "deeply cognitive and unmatched in terms of
execution", "innovative", "avant-garde and the most audacious". His
return to Yerevan in 1936 was a dramatic breakthrough for the artist's
life and creative development, as in a totalitarian regime Kochar's
progressive and innovative art was regarded as "anti-Soviet and
anti-revolutionary". However, Kochar's genius asserted itself in a new
manifestation of expression, reflected in a gesture of liberation of
his national identity. Kochar, who in his native land became the
symbol of avant-garde art, the new and freedom, reestablished the
spirit of national identity and struggle, animated in his monumental
sculptures Davit of Sassoun and Vardan Mamikonyan. Kochar's work
challenged the ideals of his epoch expressed in a new vision of
freedom of time and space.
The exhibition Kochar: Challenging the Time is yet another step to
disclose Kochar's creative genius as one of the greatest artists of
the 20th century of modern art.
The exhibition will last till December 14, 2014. The admission is free.
Sculpture Garden educational program
Over the summer, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts in cooperation with
Beeline Armentel launched a new educational program. The program is
based on sculptures exhibited at the Cafesjian Sculpture Garden and is
an exceptional opportunity to newly introduce the animalistic artworks
of the Cafesjian Sculpture Garden to children and their parents in a
joyful and creative museum setting.

Garden program. In the first part of the program, the participants had
a tour in the Cafesjian Sculpture Garden and got familiarized with
presented artists and their animalistic works, artwork medium and
execution techniques. The second part of the program continued at the
Creative Hall of CCA, where participants made new works with provided
materials. At the end of the program, families made groups and
