Yerevan /Mediamax/. Russian serviceman Valery Permyakov who is accused
of a murder of 6 people in Gyumri on January 12 should stay in Armenia
and be prosecuted by the Armenian court.
Gyumri Mayor Samvel Balasanyan who had returned from the U.S. a day
before said this at a press conference at Gyumri Mayor's Office.
"We demand that Permyakov be punished by our court and everything be
transparent", said Balasanyan.
He called for not to "making a gap between Armenia-Russia centuries-old
relations by this one incident".
Touching upon the issue of reconsidering the deployment of Russian
military base in Gyumri, Samvel Balasanyan said that he doesn't see
such an issue presently.
"Naturally, the command of the military base has its share of guilt,
and the investigative bodies are handling the issue now. The issue
is on the legal level, and I can't comment on it", said the Gyumri
Mayor adding that sever punishment in such cases "will be a lesson
for all the Russian servicemen in Gyumri".
As for not declaring the day of mourning in the town, Samvel Balasanyan
noted that the Gyumri Mayor's Office had the intention but they didn't
have the legal basis as the decision is within the powers of the
National Assembly or President. He didn't specify whether the Gyumri
Mayor's Office had sent a relevant request to the Armenian President.
